Five years after HRH The Prince of Wales launched The British Asian Trust at Windsor Castle, supporters celebrated its inspiring progress at dinner there on 13 February.

HRH The Prince of Wales praised the efforts of donors, partners and celebrities for their role in helping the Trust to transform the lives of more than 350,000 poor people across South Asia through education, health and livelihood initiatives.

“What has been incredibly heartening, if I may say so, is the way that communities in this country have come together to support the work of my British Asian Trust,” the Prince said. “The generous support of everyone in this room – and the wider communities you represent – is making a real difference to the lives of disadvantaged communities right across South Asia. In all cases, what we are trying to do is the proverbial ‘hands up’ rather than a ‘hand out’,” he said.

“I can only think the way in which the whole idea has taken off – to my delight – reflects not only the marvellous generosity of so many of you, but also the deep historic links between the people of this country and South Asia,” the Prince said.

British Asian Trust celebrity Ambassadors including comedian Nitin Ganatra, news presenters Tasmin Lucia Khan and Ritula Shah, musician Navin Kundra, and actors Laila Rouass and Ray Panthaki, were on hand to salute the Trust’s success.

EastEnders star Nitin Ganatra said British Asians like to contribute to their mother countries. “There is a strong connection to homelands,” he said.  “The Trust facilitates an avenue in which we can help.”

Celebrated singer-songwriter Navin Kundra said HRH The Prince of Wales “made us feel proud of our work at The British Asian Trust.”

A £1 million grant from international mobile operator Lycamobile for work in education and employment in Sri Lanka was announced by HRH The Prince of Wales during the gala dinner. “This generosity will make an enormous difference to our ability to assist the most disadvantaged in meaningful, practical ways,” the Prince said.

The British Asian Trust www.britishasiantrust.org, a Prince’s Charity, provides access to education, health care and livelihood opportunities that lift people and communities out of poverty in South Asia and the UK. It was founded in 2007 by a group of Asian business leaders at the suggestion of HRH The Prince of Wales.

British Asian singer, songwriter, Ash King was awarded a prestigious Bollywood prize in Mumbai tonight (10th February) at the annual Stardust Awards. King won the “Best New Male Singing Sensation” Award at the star studded event. The evening saw him rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s biggest Indian film stars including the legendary Rekha, Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Vidya Balan, Kajol, Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu plus many more. Ash beat off tough competition from the likes of Ali Zafar, Kamal Khan and Shahid Mallya, all of whom featured in the same category.

On accepting the award, Ash said:

“THANK YOU…WHAT A YEAR! BOLLYWOOD HAS SHOWN ME SO MUCH LOVE. I’m TOUCHED! Here’s to more songs, more magic. THANK YOU STARDUST. Thank you to the fans! It has been a great year for my songs, especially ‘Te Amo’ and ‘I Love You’, big thanks to Pritam for that. A R Rahman introduced me to the industry and I am ever grateful. It is an honour to be part of this industry.”

Ash rounded off with an acapella of ‘I Love You’ and woo’d the all-star crowd, before Kareena Kapoor dazzled the stage with her medley of dance numbers from her latest movie ‘Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’ – including Ash King’s current Bollywood hit ‘Aunty Ji’.

The London boy from Southall is rocking Bollywood and is dubbed the one to watch this year. Upon walking the red carpet and leaving the ceremony, King was met with a fan frenzy. Ever the entertainer he sang ‘Te Amo’ for his fans, in what became a media rush to catch the live impromptu medley of Ash King songs, with award in hand.

Ash continues his stay in India this month to record more material, having already sung on no less than 6 major Bollywood soundtracks, including work with Oscar-winning AR Rahman and much loved Bollywood maestro Pritam. His hits have included ‘Dil Gira Dafatan’ (‘Dehli 6′), ‘Te Amo’ (‘Dum Maaro Dum’) and ‘I Love You’ (‘Bodyguard’).

One of the most recognised Asian rappers in recent years, Canadian Roach Killa is back with another smash! Taking the British Asian scene by storm with his exciting hip hop / reggae flow, Roach has been a popular artist in the UK since 2008 and he returns with a brand new track Oh Girl, releasing via Moviebox Records on iTunes today (9^th February).

Oh Girl is a laid back and catchy R’n’B song with a twist. The track sees Roach rap in Punjabi for the first time on a solo release and producer Surinder Rattan fuses the sound with Roach’s inimitable reggae style perfectly.

Roach says: “This track is one of my favourite songs from the last couple of years. I’m rapping in Punjabi, a style which I haven’t fully expressed before and I’m excited about it. Teaming up with Surinder Rattan again was awesome, a dream combination last time round for ‘Yaara Dildara’. We’re just as happy with ‘Oh Girl’ and hope the fans and media will love it just as much.”

Roach Killa, originally of Pakistani descent, has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the Asian music industry, including Miss Pooja, Apache Indian, Rishi Rich, Tigerstyle and H-Dhami to name a few. In 2009 his track Yaara Dildara, produced by Surinder Rattan, secured him the number one spot on the Official Asian Download Chart, amassing over one million YouTube hits in the process. The track was taken off ‘Revolution’, an album which also featured songs with Apache Indian, Blitzkrieg and Joga.

In the last year, Roach has followed up the release of ‘Revolution’ with various collaborations, most notably with Bhangra sensation Garry Sandhu, on hits such as ‘Dil De De’ and ‘Din Raat’, cementing his position as one of the most popular and in-demand Urban Asian artists in the UK. Most recently he has featured on Miss Pooja’s ‘Ferrari Laike’, a fast-paced Punjabi dance-floor smash produced by Tigerstyle, taken from her album ‘Breathless’.
